How You Can Help Prevent Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI) at Work

Whether you work in an office, a retail store, a restaurant, or virtually any other workplace location, odds are high you are expected to complete the same or similar tasks day-in and day-out. Mental strain is not the only danger of being stuck in a workplace routine, though. As time goes on, making the same motion, no matter how subtle it might be at first, can eventually cause a painful or debilitating repetitive stress injury (RSI).

Reducing the chances of you suffering an RSI due to your occupation should be a priority for yourself and your employer. But how can it be done? The methods vary depending on what is typically asked of you while on-the-clock.

Here is a list of some useful tips to prevent repetitive stress injuries at work:

  • Go ergonomic: Officer workers and anyone with a desk job can expect to spend upwards of eight hours a day at a computer. Typing and mouse-use can gradually strain your wrist and fingers, possibly causing carpal tunnel and similar complications. Ask your employer for a more comfortable ergonomic setup at your computer. Do not forget to improve your chair if sitting for long hours is causing you back pain.
  • Team lift: Many workers not in an office setting will find themselves required to lift heavy objects from time to time, if not daily. Never attempt to carry something too cumbersome for you to carry alone comfortably or safely. Team lift whenever possible, even for objects that might not require two people.
  • Stretch: Find ways to stretch throughout the day. There are many stretches you can do while at a desk to effectively prevent muscle cramps, strains, and discomfort. If you are an active worker, be sure to stretch all muscle groups you will need before starting, as if you are about to exercise at the gym.
  • Take a break: When feeling sore, overwhelmed, or exhausted, take a moment to slow down, catch your breath, and relax a little. Your employer should understand the need for an occasional break. They may even be required to provide you a break every two hours, depending on your occupation or job title.

If you get hurt at work, including developing a repetitive stress injury over the course of weeks, months, or years, you should be given adequate workers’ compensation benefits to help you recuperate. You might even be deserving of Social Security Disability benefits if your RSI has caused a permanent debilitation. Wax & Wax, A Law Corporation and our Glendale workers’ compensation attorneys are here to help you seek appropriate benefits, either during your initial filing or if your claim is denied.
